Lesson 3

Personalised outreach towards a useful conversation

A good first message is short, personal and about the other person. Mention why you are contacting them specifically, offer something of value, and make an easy, low-pressure suggestion.

A simple structure works: a specific reason ("I read your post about scheduling delays"), a relevant thought or resource ("We found that many delays come from late order changes; here is a two-page checklist"), and a soft question ("Would it be useful to compare notes for 20 minutes?").

Avoid long introductions about your company, attachments in first messages and pressure tactics such as fake deadlines. Do not send a sales pitch immediately after someone accepts a connection request.

If there is no reply, one polite follow-up after a week or two is reasonable. After that, stop and continue engaging with their content instead. Respect a "no" and do not add people to automated sequences without their consent.

When someone does reply, move the conversation to a format that suits them — a call, an email or a meeting — and prepare as you would for any discovery conversation.
