Lesson 2

Stakeholders, buying stages and the right interaction

Business decisions usually involve several people. A typical buying group includes someone who feels the problem every day, someone who owns the budget, technical or specialist evaluators, procurement, and often a senior sponsor who needs to approve the change. Each asks a different question: Will this work for us? Is it worth it? Is it safe? Is the contract sound?

It helps to think in simple stages: recognising a need, exploring options, evaluating suppliers, and deciding and committing. At each stage, a different interaction is most useful. Early on, a short exploratory video call or a useful article may be enough. During evaluation, a structured workshop with the specialists works better than a generic presentation. Near the decision, a concise written proposal and a call with the sponsor matter most.

Choose the format for the purpose, not out of habit. Not every step needs a meeting: a well-written email may move things forward faster. And some moments, such as a difficult negotiation or a first meeting with a sponsor, may justify meeting in person if that is possible.
